Jakarta Produces 8,000 Tonnes of Waste Daily, Environment Minister Supports Waste Sorting Initiative

Environment Minister Jumhur Hidayat revealed that Indonesia produces a total of 141,000 tonnes of waste per day, with 75% already being managed effectively. Meanwhile, waste in Jakarta reaches 8,000 tonnes per day. “Across Indonesia, there are 141,000 tonnes of waste every day. In Jakarta, there are 8,000 tonnes of waste every day. In fact, nationwide, 75% of new waste is still 75% for good management,” Jumhur stated in his speech at the Waste Sorting Movement Declaration event on Jalan Rasuna Said, South Jakarta, on Sunday (10/5/2026). Jumhur appreciated the Waste Sorting Movement initiated by Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung in the capital. He invited the movement to be implemented across Indonesia. “Mr Governor, I am confident that where there is a will, there is a way. I agree that Jakarta’s waste must be resolved, and I support the Waste Sorting Movement in Jakarta. And also, as the Indonesian Environment Minister, I am hitching a ride on this from Jakarta; let’s implement it across Indonesia now,” he said. Jumhur also disclosed plans for a waste management roadmap proposed by the Ministry of Environment. He noted that Jakarta is ahead of the planned roadmap. “Indeed, Jakarta must lead by example. After being appointed by the President, we are now preparing a waste roadmap to be completed nationwide in two years. And Jakarta has preceded it, alhamdulillah. This means we can adopt some ideas and thoughts, and perhaps synchronisation can occur,” Jumhur stated. Previously, Pramono Anung declared the Waste Sorting Movement. This aligns with Governor’s Instruction Number 5 of 2026 regarding waste sorting. “I believe building Jakarta cannot be done alone. Waste is one of the issues. Therefore, today, in accordance with the Governor’s Instruction, we will launch a movement for waste sorting,” Pramono said at the location on the same occasion.
