The Class IIA Narcotics Prison in Jakarta has again foiled two attempts by visitors to smuggle drugs, using the modus operandi of hiding the illicit substances inside contraceptive devices. “Today we thwarted two drug smuggling attempts by visitors trying to enter the Jakarta Narcotics Prison,” said Acting Head of the Jakarta Narcotics Prison Edi Sigit Budiman in Jakarta on Monday. The discoveries occurred when Main Entrance Security officers conducted inspections of visitors seeking to enter the prison area. The first smuggling attempt was thwarted at around 2.30 p.m. Western Indonesia Time. During the inspection, officers found a substance suspected to be narcotics weighing approximately 9 grammes. Fifteen minutes later, precisely at 2.45 p.m., officers again discovered drugs suspected to weigh around 20 grammes from another visitor. According to Sigit, both perpetrators used the same modus operandi to deceive officers. The drugs were wrapped using contraceptive devices, then hidden in the genital area before being brought into the prison. “The modus operandi was smuggling drugs via wrapped contraceptive devices, which were then inserted into the perpetrator’s genitals in an attempt to bring them into the Jakarta Narcotics Prison,” Sigit explained. Sigit commended the alertness of the Main Entrance Security officers who were able to detect the smuggling attempts before the prohibited items entered the prison environment. He stressed that this success is evidence of the commitment of correctional staff to keeping the prison free from drug trafficking. “Alhamdulillah, thanks to the thoroughness and alertness of officers in the field, the drug smuggling attempts into the prison were thwarted. This shows that the supervision we carry out is running well,” said Sigit. Following the discovery, prison authorities immediately reported the incident to their superiors, including the Head of the Regional Office of the Directorate General of Corrections for the Special Capital Region of Jakarta. In addition, coordination was also carried out with the police for further legal proceedings. From initial examinations, it was revealed that one of the perpetrators was tempted by a monetary reward to carry out the act. Based on statements obtained by officers, the perpetrator was promised payment of around Rp4 million to Rp5 million if they succeeded in bringing the drugs into the prison. This information is now part of the police investigation to uncover the drug trafficking network behind the smuggling attempt.
