Jakarta (ANTARA) — The Traffic Directorate of the Jakarta Metropolitan Police (Polda Metro Jaya) has seized a vehicle bearing counterfeit diplomatic licence plates suspected of being used improperly.

Head of Law Enforcement at the Polda Metro Jaya Traffic Directorate, Adjunct Senior Commissioner Ojo Ruslani, explained that the incident occurred on Tuesday at approximately 08:15 local time on the Inner City Toll Road at Tegal Parang, heading westbound, in South Jakarta.

“Action was taken against an Avanza Veloz vehicle using diplomatic plate number CD 37 04, which did not correspond to its designated use,” Ojo said.

He explained that the enforcement action was carried out after police received a report from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding counterfeit diplomatic licence plates numbered CD 37 436 and CD 37 04.

“CD 37 04 is registered to the Embassy of the Russian Federation and designated for a BMW vehicle, whilst CD 37 436 is a forgery and not registered with the Russian Embassy,” Ojo stated.

He said the vehicle had been issued a traffic citation and would be promptly transferred to the General Criminal Investigation Directorate of Polda Metro Jaya for further investigation into the forgery.

“The citation was issued under Article 280 of the Road Traffic and Transport Act for the use of licence plates not corresponding to their designated purpose,” Ojo disclosed.

Article 280 of Law No. 22 of 2009 on Road Traffic and Transport provides sanctions for vehicles not fitted with officially issued licence plates. Offenders face a maximum custodial sentence of two months or a maximum fine of Rp500,000.
