The Jakarta Metropolitan Police has formed an anti-theft squad to combat street crime that has been troubling the public.

Director of General Criminal Investigation at the Jakarta Metropolitan Police, Commissioner Pol. Iman Imanuddin, said the formation of the special squad was carried out because street crime not only causes material losses but also endangers the lives of victims.

He explained that the anti-theft squad would be stationed at several vulnerable points and operate for 24 hours to ensure the safety and security of the public.

“Our team, both at the police precinct and district levels, as well as the Directorate of General Criminal Investigation, will be deployed throughout the Jakarta Metropolitan Police jurisdiction,” said Iman at a press conference on Friday (15/5).

Iman said the team would be equipped with tactical gear, ranging from helmets and vests to weapons. In addition, his party is also preparing a special channel through social media to receive and share information related to criminal acts.

“Because we need active collaboration so that we can move quickly. The speed at which we receive information will help in the disclosure of cases and the handling of incidents in the field,” he said.

In addition to Jakarta, Iman said that the surrounding areas such as Bekasi, Depok, and Tangerang would also be a special focus for the anti-theft squad.

Through the presence of the team, the police hope to reduce the space and opportunities for street criminals.

“Hopefully, the efforts we are making can create a sense of security for the community,” he said.
