Jakarta Police Arrest Two Motorcycle Thieves Who Shot Ojek Driver, Seize Firearm

The Jatanras Sub-directorate of the Jakarta Metropolitan Police’s General Criminal Investigation Directorate has arrested two motorcycle theft suspects who shot an ojek driver in Matraman, East Jakarta. During the arrest, police also seized the firearm used in the crime. “From the arrest, officers confiscated a homemade silver revolver and one 9-millimetre calibre bullet,” explained AKBP Abdul Rahim, Head of the Jatanras Sub-directorate, in a statement to reporters on Saturday (25/7/2026).

Rahim explained that the two suspects were apprehended in Tebing Village, Melinting District, East Lampung Regency. The shooting incident occurred on Jalan Salemba Utan Barat, Palmeriam, Matraman, East Jakarta, on Saturday (18/7) at around 12:22 PM local time. The motorcycle owner initially heard footsteps and saw two individuals attempting to steal his vehicle.

“The witness then banged on the door from inside, causing the two perpetrators to flee. When attempting to chase them, the witness saw one of the perpetrators brandish a firearm, so he abandoned the pursuit and shouted for help,” stated Senior Commissioner Iman Imanuddin of the Jakarta Police’s Criminal Investigation Directorate. Hearing the shouts of ‘thief’ from the owner, an ojek driver who became the victim tried to assist and attempted to block the two perpetrators.

“One of the perpetrators then fired a shot that struck the victim in the right thigh. After that, both perpetrators fled the scene,” Iman added. The suspects are currently undergoing further examination to determine the origin of the firearm and their possible involvement in other criminal activities. They are charged under Article 479 in conjunction with Article 17 of the Criminal Code concerning attempted theft with violence.
