Jakarta Metropolitan Police Chief Inspector General Asep Edi Suheri established an anti-brawl task force following a public order muster held some time ago. The task force, formed in collaboration with local residents, has successfully curbed street brawls and prevented fatalities.

Jakarta Metropolitan Police Public Relations Head Commissioner Budi Hermanto said the anti-brawl task force had been operational since its formation on 12 February. The unit comprises members of the Mobile Brigade Corps (Brimob) and Sabhara patrol units, as well as various community elements.

“Throughout the period from 12 to 23 February 2026, officers intensively combed through vulnerable hotspots to disperse gatherings of youths identified as planning to engage in brawls. This approach has proven effective in mapping potential security disturbances before they escalate into physical conflicts on the streets,” Budi told reporters on Tuesday (24/2/2026).

Budi explained that during its operational period, the anti-brawl task force successfully apprehended six youths who were preparing for a brawl. Police seized a number of bladed weapons as evidence from the youths. The suspects have been processed in accordance with applicable legal provisions.

Budi said the law enforcement measures were taken as a deterrent for those reckless enough to carry bladed weapons and endanger the lives of others.

“Active community involvement has also yielded positive results. In Cipayung, Depok, local residents successfully foiled a group of youths’ plans to brawl and handed them over to Pancoran Mas Police Station,” Budi explained.

“This step marks an important milestone in uniting the vision between law enforcement officers and residents for the security of the community,” he added.

Budi noted that a number of suspected brawl participants were also given educational sanctions. Among other measures, the suspects were required to attend religious sermons at a mosque.

“This step was taken so they would gain moral enlightenment and recognise the wrongfulness of their actions,” Budi said.

“The primary focus of this task force is to prioritise preventive and humane measures through collaborative citizen patrols and mobile patrols from Brimob and Sabhara units,” he continued.

He conveyed that the Police Chief appreciated the community’s collaboration in jointly maintaining public order. This collaboration, he said, successfully prevented the fatalities that frequently occur during brawl incidents.

“The Police Chief greatly appreciates the active collaboration of the community. Our approach this time is very humane yet remains firm. The results are highly significant. Whereas in January we recorded three fatalities due to brawls, during the Ramadan period under this task force’s supervision, the number of fatalities is nil. This is a collective achievement between the Police and residents in upholding the sanctity of the holy month,” he concluded.
