Jakarta Poised to Become a World Dance Stage as IWDF 2026 Engages Thousands of Dancers and a Cultural Parade
Jakarta will become a world dance stage in late May 2026. The Jakarta Provincial Culture Office has confirmed that the Indonesia World Dance Festival (IWDF) 2026 will be held on Saturday, 30 May, as part of World Dance Day celebrations and to mark five centuries of Jakarta as a city. The international-scale cultural festival is one of the major agendas of the DKI Jakarta provincial government to strengthen Jakarta’s image as a global city through cultural diplomacy and performing arts.
IWDF 2026 will be staged at Gedung Kesenian Jakarta and Pos Bloc Jakarta, involving more than 80 studios and arts communities from across Indonesia and abroad. The event is organised in partnership with the Rosmala Sari Dewi Foundation as the implementing partner.
“Thousands of dancers are scheduled to perform and enliven public spaces in Jakarta in a single international cultural celebration. The programme will feature flagship activities such as the Nusantara Dance Festival, Cultural Parade, Battle Dance Fusion, Topeng Tunggal Dance Workshop, and a Gala Performance as the climax,” said Rosmala Sari Dewi in a statement on Thursday 21 May.
Not merely an arts festival, IWDF 2026 is also projected to drive the cultural ecosystem and the creative economy in Jakarta. The event will provide space for involvement by SMEs, creative workers, and the supporting industries of the performing arts, which are believed to have a positive impact on tourism and public life in the capital.
“One of the festival’s attractions is cross-generational collaboration, bringing dancers from Generation Alpha, millennials, and Baby Boomers,” she added.
The cross-generational collaboration is one of the festival’s main draws. Generation Alpha will be represented by Miyu Ananthamaya Pranoto from Jakarta, a young street dancer known for a string of international achievements. Miyu masters various dance genres, from hip-hop, freestyle, Afro, house, breaking, to krump.
Meanwhile, Millennials will be represented by Puri Senjani Apriliani from Surabaya, a contemporary dancer and choreographer known for addressing women’s issues, social and gender equality in her works.
“Baby Boomers will be represented by Kartini Kisam, a maestro of the Topeng Betawi dance from the third generation of a family of artists Dji’ung and Kinang, who has received various awards as a cultural custodian,” she said.
The Gala Performance will feature acts including Toton Caribo, Moluccan Soul, and Bravery Dancer.
Beyond being a stage, IWDF 2026 is expected to be a strategic platform for dancers and art communities to broaden national and international networks, build professional portfolios, and open career opportunities in the performing arts industry.
“Participation from people across regions and countries makes the festival part of Jakarta’s cultural diplomacy, introducing Nusantara’s rich cultural heritage to the world,” she concluded.
