Jakarta Plants 21,000 Mangrove Seedlings to Commemorate World Mangrove Day

The Jakarta Provincial Government planted 21,060 mangrove seedlings simultaneously across five coastal areas to commemorate World Mangrove Day, expand green spaces, restore coastal ecosystems, and strengthen the protection of Jakarta’s coastline. The activity was led by Vice Governor Rano Karno and involved nearly 350 participants from government bodies, universities, schools, businesses, communities, and the public. “Today we are targeting the planting of 21,060 mangrove seedlings with the involvement of nearly 350 participants,” Rano said at the Angke Kapuk Nature Tourism Park, Penjaringan, North Jakarta, on Sunday. Planting was carried out in the Angke Kapuk Production Forest, the Angke Kapuk Protection Forest, the PT KCN Port, the Muara Angke Ecomarine Area, and the Muara Angke KOMAH Area. This activity is also part of the series of events leading up to Jakarta’s 500th anniversary. According to Vice Governor Rano, restoring coastal ecosystems requires the involvement of various parties. Collaboration is needed so that mangrove planting does not stop as a ceremonial activity but continues through maintenance and supervision of the areas. The Angke Kapuk Production Forest was chosen as the centre of the activity because it is a new plot of land resulting from a 1.73-hectare compensation agreement for a Forest Area Use Permit from PT Kapuk Naga Indah. The area will be developed as a coastal greening zone. Through this mangrove planting, the Jakarta Provincial Government hopes that the ecological functions of the coastal areas will be strengthened, green spaces will continue to increase, and public awareness of environmental conservation will grow.
