Jakarta Millennial Film Workshop 2026 to Strengthen East Jakarta Creative Economy
The East Jakarta (Jaktim) municipal government believes the Short Film Workshop for the 2026 Jakarta Millennial Film Festival can strengthen the creative economy sector through the development of young talent in filmmaking. “We continue to encourage the strengthening of the creative economy sector through the development of young talent in film. This effort is realised through the Short Film Workshop for the 2026 Jakarta Millennial Film Festival,” said East Jakarta City Secretary Eka Darmawan in Jakarta on Thursday. He mentioned that film serves not only as entertainment media but also as an effective means to convey ideas, build character, and record the dynamics of community life. Amid the rapid development of digital technology, he said the younger generation has wider opportunities to produce audio-visual works with economic value as well as social and cultural impact. According to Eka, the easy access to film production technology currently opens opportunities for young people to engage in the creative industry without having to face major barriers as in the past. “Film is one of the most effective media for conveying ideas, building character, and recording the dynamics of community life. In this digital era, the younger generation has increasingly broad opportunities to create through audio-visual media,” said Eka. He further added that support from increasingly accessible technology must be balanced with an improvement in human resource quality. Therefore, he hopes that through this workshop, participants will not only gain technical knowledge about film production but also be able to develop storytelling skills that highlight positive values. “As well as cultural diversity, the spirit of collaboration, and the identity of a dynamic and competitive Jakarta community,” said Eka. From an economic perspective, he continued, the activity is considered to have a strategic role in strengthening the creative industry ecosystem in East Jakarta. The film and digital content industries are now among the creative economy sub-sectors showing continued growth, in line with the increasing consumption of digital content on various platforms. The workshop activity, which is part of the 2026 Jakarta Millennial Film Festival series, is also seen as a development platform for the younger generation to cultivate competencies relevant to the future needs of the creative industry. Besides technical skills, participants are encouraged to understand the creative process that can produce high-quality works with market value. Eka also assessed that East Jakarta has great potential to develop into a centre for the birth of young creators and filmmakers. Diverse community life stories, local cultural richness, and urban area developments are sources of inspiration that can be turned into compelling film works with economic value. Therefore, he expressed that with a stronger creative ecosystem and support for human resource development, East Jakarta is optimistic it can produce more creative industry players capable of competing in both national and global markets, while making the film sector one of the driving motors of the creative economy.
