Jakarta Metropolitan Police Upgraded to Type A Plus: Experts Highlight Need for Improved Policing Conduct
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - After the Jakarta Metropolitan Police officially became the only ‘Type A Plus’ police force in Indonesia, experts say that this upgrade must be accompanied by a change in the attitude of police officers in the field.
Police observer and former Kompolnas Commissioner, Poengky Indarti, stressed that the quality of service must improve at all levels, including local police stations, and there should no longer be any officers who are indifferent, arrogant, or unresponsive to the public.
“The performance of the police should not reflect violence, militarism, or indifference, arrogance, and reluctance in serving the community,” Poengky told Kompas.com on Saturday (16/5/2026).
Poengky also highlighted the importance of using body cameras and dashboard cameras for officers on patrol to increase transparency and supervision in the field.
In addition, she said that the police need to focus more on handling cases that disturb the public, such as online gambling and street crime, which have recently become increasingly rampant.
“The police should conduct regular patrols, equip themselves with body cameras and dashboard cameras, greet residents, and prevent crimes that disturb the community, such as robberies and online gambling,” she said.
Poengky emphasised the need for periodic evaluations to ensure that the upgrade of the Jakarta Metropolitan Police truly has an impact on the quality of public services.
Meanwhile, Head of Public Relations of the Jakarta Metropolitan Police, Commissioner Budi Hermanto, stated that the upgrade is accompanied by a commitment to improve service to the community.
He said that the Chief of the Jakarta Metropolitan Police had emphasised that all officers should not hurt people’s feelings in carrying out their duties.
“But it must be done, as you have heard the slogan of the Chief of the Jakarta Metropolitan Police, ‘Never hurt people’s feelings.’ That is the only guideline. It is a big thing, but its implementation must be carried out,” said Budi at the Jakarta Metropolitan Police Headquarters on Friday (15/5/2026).
