Jakarta Metropolitan Police Apprehend Debt Collector Suspect in South Tangerang Lawyer Stabbing
Jakarta (ANTARA) – The Special Crime Investigation Unit of the General Criminal Investigation Directorate of the Jakarta Metropolitan Police has apprehended the suspected perpetrator of the stabbing of a lawyer in the Kelapa Dua sub-district, South Tangerang, which occurred on Monday (23 February).
“The suspect, identified as JBI, was arrested on Tuesday (24 February) at 11.50 pm in Semarang, Central Java,” said the Head of Public Relations of the Jakarta Metropolitan Police, Commissioner Budi Hermanto, in a statement in Jakarta on Wednesday.
Budi stated that the victim, identified as BS, suffered serious stab wounds after being involved in a dispute with a number of unidentified individuals who claimed to be debt collectors regarding the repossession of a vehicle.
Currently, the suspected perpetrator is undergoing questioning for further investigation. The police are prioritising the protection of the public and ensuring that every act of violence is processed in accordance with legal provisions.
“We are responding quickly to every incident that causes unrest. Debt collection must not be carried out outside of legal mechanisms, especially if accompanied by intimidation or violence. Every violation will be dealt with firmly in accordance with legal provisions,” he said.
The Jakarta Metropolitan Police also appealed to the public to remain calm and not be easily influenced by unverified information.
Previously, a video circulated on Instagram via the account @fakta.indo showing a commotion between debt collectors and the victim regarding the repossession of a vehicle.
“A lawyer named Bastian Sori, SH, who is an official of the Regional Leadership Council of the Indonesian Advocates Congress (KAI) in the Banten province, became the victim of a stabbing by individuals claiming to be debt collectors from Mandiri Tunas Finance,” the account wrote.
The account also wrote that the incident occurred at the victim’s residence in the Palem Semi housing complex, Karawaci, Tangerang, on Monday (23 February), which falls under the jurisdiction of the South Tangerang Police. The incident began when three suspected perpetrators forced their way into the victim’s yard and attempted to repossess the victim’s car.
The victim refused the repossession because he believed that the procedure did not comply with legal provisions. An argument ensued, and one of the perpetrators then carried out the stabbing. After the incident, the perpetrators fled, while the victim was immediately taken to hospital for treatment.
