Jakarta LPDP Scholarship Scheme to Offer Free Master's and Doctoral Degrees Abroad
The Jakarta Provincial Government (Pemprov DKI Jakarta) is set to implement the LPDP Jakarta programme starting in 2027. This scholarship will be awarded for Master’s (S2) and Doctoral (S3) level education, with an initial quota of approximately 50 to 75 recipients.
Jakarta residents from underprivileged families who demonstrate strong academic capabilities will be prioritised. The scholarship also provides opportunities to pursue higher education at international universities.
The programme is legally grounded in Jakarta Governor Regulation (Pergub) Number 20 of 2026, which was signed by Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung on 12 September 2026.
“The number will be approximately between 50 to 75 people, and it will be conducted professionally,” said Pramono in Jakarta on Thursday (17/9/2026).
Key details of the LPDP Jakarta scheme, which is scheduled to commence next year, include:
- Scholarships for Master’s and Doctoral Degrees
LPDP Jakarta will provide funding for postgraduate education. The programme is designed to offer high-achieving Jakarta residents the chance to continue their studies, including at top-tier universities abroad.
Yustinus Prastowo, Deputy Coordinator of the Governor’s Special Staff, stated via social media that the programme is designed to ensure meritorious individuals have the opportunity to attend the world’s best campuses.
- Initial Quota of 50-75 Recipients
In its initial phase, the number of recipients is expected to be between 50 and 75. Previously, the Chairman of Commission E of the Jakarta Regional House of Representatives (DPRD), M. Subki, mentioned an allocated budget ceiling of up to Rp100 billion for 50 recipients in 2027.
Meanwhile, the Jakarta Education Office has prepared a budget draft of approximately Rp99.9 billion for the programme.
- Priority for Underprivileged Families
While targeting high achievers, the Jakarta Provincial Government will prioritise residents from low-income families who possess excellent academic abilities, as stipulated in the Governor’s Regulation.
- Selection in Collaboration with National LPDP
To determine recipients, the Jakarta Provincial Government will collaborate with the central government’s LPDP. Pramono stated that involving the national LPDP is necessary to ensure a professional selection process and to prevent nepotism or ‘titip-menitip’ practices.
However, specific details regarding the selection stages, such as administrative screening, substantive tests, or academic requirements, have not yet been disclosed.
- Study Programmes Aligned with Jakarta’s Needs
Funded study programmes will be directed to meet Jakarta’s human resource requirements. The DPRD has requested the Provincial Government to map out essential fields first to ensure recipients choose relevant disciplines. For instance, if there is a need for specialist doctors, that would become a priority.
- Registration Targeted for September 2027
LPDP Jakarta is planned to begin operations in 2027, with registration targeted to open in September 2027. Detailed official schedules, specific requirements, lists of target universities, priority study programmes, and the full scope of covered costs are still awaiting official technical guidelines from the Jakarta Provincial Government.
