Jakarta lowest on mortality rate

JAKARTA (JP): Jakarta has achieved the lowest infant mortality
rate in the country with only 33 deaths in 1,000 deliveries as
compared to 38 deaths in 1,000 newly-born infants at the national
level.

Minister of Health Sujudi said that besides reducing the
infant mortality rate, Jakarta is also succeeding in its fight
against a number of diseases, including dengue fever, diarrhea
and leprosy.

Sujudi made the statement when he presented the Satria Bhakti
Husada Kartika health medal to Governor Surjadi at City Hall on
Monday. The award was presented on the grounds that the city
performs well in promoting a number of health services, including
the Posyandu (integrated health services) program.

"Jakarta, for example, has also been successful in its
immunization program, which has spread throughout sub-district
areas in the city," the minister said, adding that Jakarta's
achievements are mostly above the average of the national level.
