Jakarta Legislator Regrets Robbery of Foreign Tourist at HI Roundabout

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Member of Commission A of the Jakarta DPRD, Kevin Wu, has expressed regret over the robbery of a foreign tourist in the HI Roundabout area, Central Jakarta.

“I am very concerned and strongly condemn the act of robbery against a foreign national in the HI Roundabout area. This is not just an ordinary street crime case, because the location is one of Jakarta’s main landmarks,” he said in Jakarta, Friday.

Kevin emphasised that a global city is not only judged by physical development such as skyscrapers and grand international events, but also by its ability to guarantee security for foreign nationals who are active in Jakarta.

To that end, he asked Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung to take serious steps to maintain Jakarta’s security, both for its own citizens and foreign nationals. If this fails, then efforts to improve Jakarta’s image, as has been done so far, will be in vain.

“Jakarta may dream of becoming a global city, but tourists and residents should not feel unsafe carrying their mobile phones on the street,” said Kevin.

According to him, the HI Roundabout is a showcase for the capital city, a symbol of modern Jakarta, and a place that is often visited by tourists and the international community.

If people can still be robbed in such an iconic area as the HI Roundabout, then this should be a serious alarm for the DKI Provincial Government and security forces.

“Jakarta should not be known and become global because of its progress, but because people feel unsafe walking in public spaces,” he said.

Kevin also asked that security in strategic areas be improved in the future by carrying out integrated patrols with the police, coordinating across departments from the Satpol PP to the Department of Transportation, and adding Closed Circuit Television (CCTV).

“The safety of the community and foreign nationals must be a priority,” he said.
