JAKARTA (JP): Tangerang will supply Jakarta with 2,800 liters of clean water per second with the completion of a new water treatment plant in the regency in 1996.
The water will be piped to two water distribution centers in Meruya, West Jakarta, and in Lebak Bulus, South Jakarta, president of the Tangerang Regency Water Company, Chusfani Kartadikaria, said.
Chusfani made the statement yesterday in Tangerang regency during a hearing with the visiting Jakarta city councilors of the City Council's Commission C for finance and Commission D for city development.
"The water supply will be designated for the West Jakarta area, from its southernmost boundaries to its northernmost boundaries with Tangerang, up to the coastal areas in North Jakarta and South Jakarta," Chusfani said.
The transmission pipes will stretch from the Cisadane river in West Java to the Pesanggrahan river in Ciputat, South Jakarta, Chusfani added.
The clean water supply, which will be piped to Jakarta, will be taken from a new water treatment plant in the Tangerang regency, which has a capacity of supplying 3,000 liters of water per second, Chusfani said.
But 2,800 liters or 93 percent of the capacity will go to Jakarta in accordance with the agreement made with the World Bank, which has given a 20-year loan to finance the project, Chusfani said.
The project is worth around Rp 120 billion, Chusfani added.
The price of the water Tangerang will sell through the Cisadane-Serpong project to Jakarta is Rp 375 per liter, Chusfani said. He added that his office is allowed to review the price every two year.
"This will increase the volume of clean water in the city from the current 12,800 liters per second to 15,600 liters per second in 1996," Machmud Ranusemito, the director of administration and finance of the city water company, PDAM Jaya, said.
This means that PDAM Jaya will be able to serve 64 percent of Jakarta population in the year 2000, Machmud said.
According to Machmud, currently, PDAM Jaya is able to serve only 44 percent of Jakarta's population of 8.4 million. (06)
