Jakarta Inspectorate Warns Civil Servants of Consequences for Online Gambling

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The DKI Jakarta Inspectorate has warned civil servants (ASN) about the legal consequences of involvement in online gambling.

“What is certain is that there is Government Regulation (PP) Number 94 of 2021 concerning employee discipline. Then, there is also the code of ethics,” said Head of the DKI Jakarta Inspectorate Dhanny Sukma in West Jakarta on Wednesday.

He affirmed that the conduct of all civil servants is continuously monitored, including playing online gambling.

“We will later observe the escalation. If the escalation meets the criteria for the imposition of disciplinary punishment and the code of ethics, especially if this is done for a second time, then certainly the disciplinary punishment will be even greater. That exists,” said Dhanny.

Furthermore, he also reminded of the impact of online gambling on family integrity and economic sustainability.

“When the family economy is no longer met because it is seasoned with false and unclear hopes (from online gambling), what emerges is conflict. When there is conflict, the impact falls on family integrity,” said Dhanny.

“Because their ability to meet their needs is limited, they will look for other ways. An ASN will also potentially seek online loans, for example. Once they are chased by online loan debts, what happens next? Depression, stress, suicidal thoughts — things we often see. Many people take their own lives solely because of problems with online loans, which originally stemmed from online gambling, because of the false hopes involved,” Dhanny revealed.

Therefore, he hoped that all civil servants within the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government would avoid online gambling and instead become pioneers in eradicating this destructive behaviour.

Meanwhile, he noted that online gambling cases in Jakarta continue to rise each year.

“The trend keeps increasing from year to year. In 2023, based on data from PPATK (the Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre), there were around 80,000 (players). The following year, it doubled, reaching a figure of around 150,000. The same goes for the following year,” Dhanny explained.

According to him, deep collective awareness is needed that online gambling is extremely dangerous for the sustainability of the family economy.

“This includes its impact on family conflict, economic conflict within families, and more broadly,” Dhanny concluded.
