Jakarta Human Rights Office Mediates False Imprisonment Case at Pedal Padel, Company Withdraws Theft Report

The Jakarta Regional Office of the Ministry of Human Rights (Kanwil KemenHAM DKI Jakarta) has facilitated mediation regarding a case of alleged assault and false imprisonment of an employee at Pedal Padel in Kebayoran Lama, South Jakarta. Following the mediation, the company withdrew a theft report it had previously lodged against the victim with the police.

Kanwil KemenHAM DKI Jakarta issued recommendations to the South Jakarta Metro Police, the DKI Jakarta Manpower, Transmigration and Energy Agency, and the DKI Jakarta Social Affairs Agency. The recommendations were compiled based on the results of coordination, clarification, and monitoring carried out by the regional office.

The office also monitored the progress of the case and visited the victim and their family to ensure that the handling process paid attention to the protection of human rights.

“We carry out the mandate to ensure that the rights of victims and those facing the law remain protected. Various coordination, clarification, and mediation efforts have been undertaken as a form of humane resolution,” said the Head of the DKI Jakarta Regional Office of the Ministry of Human Rights, Mikael Azedo Harwito, on Tuesday (28/7/2026).

Kanwil KemenHAM DKI Jakarta facilitated separate mediation sessions between the victim, the suspect, and the company’s management. During the process, the company conveyed recovery measures, including the withdrawal of the police report against the victim, the provision of restitution, the return of the victim’s vehicle, and the offer of re-employment.

This series of mediations is part of Kanwil KemenHAM DKI Jakarta’s commitment to encouraging the resolution of human rights issues in a humane manner in accordance with applicable regulations. Mikael Azedo stressed that the Ministry of Human Rights ensures that every complaint handling process is carried out objectively while guaranteeing the rights of all parties.

Kanwil KemenHAM DKI Jakarta subsequently issued recommendations to the relevant agencies. To the South Jakarta Metro Police, it recommended that law enforcement related to all police reports connected to the case be carried out professionally and transparently. The office also recommended that the DKI Jakarta Social Affairs Agency provide social rehabilitation in the form of psychological recovery (trauma healing) for the victim. Furthermore, it encouraged the DKI Jakarta Manpower, Transmigration and Energy Agency to facilitate the restoration of industrial relations and the company’s operational stability.

Mikael Azedo added that the Jakarta Regional Office of the Ministry of Human Rights will continue to monitor the progress of the case to ensure that the fulfilment of human rights runs parallel with the legal process.

Previously, the Head of the Criminal Investigation Unit of the South Jakarta Metro Police, Iptu Satrio, revealed the origins of the false imprisonment. Initially, the perpetrator only intended to interrogate the victim regarding an alleged theft of a racket, but the process became protracted because the victim was considered to be providing convoluted statements.

“Initially it was not planned, they just wanted to interrogate him. But then the process became a bit convoluted, so he was detained for too long,” said Iptu Satrio on Monday (6/7). “Maybe they wanted to find out where the racket was sold and so on. So perhaps the victim’s own explanation was unclear, which led to the interrogation taking a long time,” he added.

Pedal Padel’s management has issued an apology regarding the alleged false imprisonment of the employee accused of stealing a racket. The management expressed its deepest apologies and handed the legal process entirely over to the police.

“Pedal Padel Indonesia extends its sincerest apologies for the incident allegedly involving several Pedal Padel employees who are currently undergoing legal proceedings,” said Padel Management in a statement via its official Instagram account, as quoted by detikcom on Monday (29/6).

The management claimed to have no knowledge of the alleged false imprisonment carried out by employees against their colleague. “The actions allegedly taken by these employees were completely unknown, not ordered, and not approved by the owners or management of Pedal Padel in any capacity,” it clarified.

The management explained that the company had conducted an internal investigation regarding the alleged misuse of company assets, which was subsequently reported to the police. “However, this process can in no way be used as a reason or justification for acts of violence in any form,” it added.
