Jakarta has new deputy governor

JAKARTA (JP): Minister of Home Affairs Syarwan Hamid installed Fauzie Alvi Yasin, former assistant to the Jakarta secretary in charge of administrative affairs, as Jakarta's deputy governor for economic and financial affairs on Monday.

The post has been vacant for the last nine months since Harun Al Rasyid was promoted from the position to governor of West Nusa Tenggara in August last year.

Fauzie was the sole candidate for the post after being nominated by Governor Sutiyoso, although his nomination was opposed by city councilors.

Fauzie, 58, is a graduate from the University of Indonesia's school of economics.

His past positions include head of city-owned market management company PD Pasar Jaya, head of the city revenue agency and of the city inspectorate office.

Sutiyoso has given a guarantee that his choice is free from collusion and nepotism.

The inauguration ceremony took place at Syarwan's office on Jl. Medan Merdeka Utara in Central Jakarta. (ylt)
