Jakarta Governor's Unique Approach to Curbing Street Brawls: Expanding Boxing Arenas
Pramono Anung plans to increase the number of boxing arenas in the Kampung Melayu area as an effort to suppress the rate of street brawls in the capital. This plan emerged following the inauguration of a boxing ring under the Pasar Rebo flyover in East Jakarta on Monday.
According to Pramono, the presence of such sports facilities is believed to be having a positive impact on reducing brawls in the surrounding areas. He stated that he had received reports from the Mayor of East Jakarta indicating that the rate of conflict among youths in the area has begun to decrease since the boxing arena started being utilised.
“Because this facility already exists in the Ciracas District, I spontaneously decided to build another one in Kampung Melayu, similar to this,” said Pramermono.
He hopes that boxing arenas can serve as a platform for young people to channel their energy and creativity more positively. With easily accessible sports facilities, Pramono is optimistic that the potential for brawls and street violence can be suppressed.
“Hopefully, this will benefit the youth in East Jakarta so that their energy is channelled through places like these, making them more productive, reducing street fighting, and hopefully, they can be involved in maintaining Jakarta,” he said.
The boxing ring under the Pasar Rebo flyover has been in use since January 2026. The facility occupies an area of 247 square metres with a ring size of 9.5 metres by 9.5 metres. Training activities are directly supervised by professional boxing communities.
Pramono emphasised that the management of the facility will be conducted jointly by the government and local communities. This scheme is expected to ensure the arena remains orderly, open, and supervised, while simultaneously preventing illegal levies. Furthermore, he stressed the importance of providing free access for the public to use these sports facilities. However, he noted that the welfare of coaches must also be considered to ensure that the training process remains sustainable and high-quality.
Moving forward, Pramono hopes that similar facilities will not only be present in East Jakarta but can also be developed in various other regions across the capital.
