Jakarta, Indonesia – The Jakarta Provincial Government is preparing a special gesture for residents celebrating Eid al-Fitr in the capital city.

All public transport services under the Jakarta Provincial Government will be made free of charge, as an effort to create a more comfortable Eid atmosphere whilst stimulating Jakarta’s economic circulation.

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung emphasised that the policy is aimed at facilitating residents who are not travelling home (mudik) so they can still enjoy the Eid moment without having to travel outside the city.

“To attract people – rather than dealing with traffic jams or shopping abroad and so on – it is better for them to stay in Jakarta,” he said.

The free transport programme is not only intended for Jakarta residents but also for visitors from outside the region who are holidaying in the capital city during Eid.

With this policy, residents can move about more freely to maintain family ties, visit tourist destinations, and enjoy various attractions without being burdened by transport costs.

The Jakarta Provincial Government hopes this step will keep the economy alive during the extended holiday season.

A number of events to enliven Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr include the Jakarta Light Festival, Harmoni Ramadan Jakarta, Rebana Ramadan Colossal, Mudik ke Jakarta, and Jakarta Festive Wonder, which offers discounts of up to 70 per cent at shopping centres.

With a combination of free transport and various festivals, Eid in Jakarta this year is projected to remain vibrant, even for those who choose not to travel home.
