Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has announced plans to establish a haul (traditional Islamic commemorative gathering) for Betawi Islamic scholars as a mark of respect for their historical contributions to Jakarta and Betawi culture.

The idea emerged during a dawn prayer session with Kiai Zawawi at City Hall, where Pramono received a suggestion to organise the event. Speaking at a breaking-of-fast gathering at Tangkuban Parahu Mosque in South Jakarta on Monday 2 March 2026, Pramono said: “The time has come for the Jakarta provincial government, together with the Betawi Council, to hold a haul for the Betawi Islamic scholars who have served in developing Jakarta’s culture and customs.”

Pramono proposed that the haul be held annually, suggesting the National Monument (Monas) as the venue. “I will propose that this be held every June at Monas. The official host should not be us collectively, but formally the Jakarta provincial government,” he explained.

The governor expressed confidence that the event will bring blessings and benefit. He also proposed a “Betawi Night” initiative to welcome state guests, stating: “I believe that if we continuously hold this event—whether a Betawi Night to welcome state guests of any kind—Betawi culture will certainly become a source of pride for all of us.”
