Jakarta Governor Prepares River Normalisation Programme Amid Prolonged Dry Season

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has stated that the regional government will normalise rivers during the prolonged dry season. “For Jakarta, once again, river normalisation will be carried out when the water discharge is low,” Pramono said after attending a Capacity Building event on Bond Issuance at the Tribrata Hotel & Convention Center, Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta, on Tuesday, 21 July 2026. River normalisation will soon be carried out in several locations where land has been cleared by the Water Resources Agency and the National Land Agency. Pramono added that the regional government has also prepared anticipatory measures should a water crisis occur during the prolonged dry season. “However, Jakarta is not currently experiencing a water crisis,” he said. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) predicts that the 2026 dry season will be drier and longer than normal due to the El Niño phenomenon, with the peak of the drought expected between July and September 2026. A reduction in the water discharge of the Ciliwung River has already been observed at several points in Bogor City, West Java, including in the Babakan Pasar sub-district and at the Katalumpa Weir.
