Jakarta Governor Pramono Opens Door to Adding More Free Public Transport Groups, Currently at 15

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has opened up the possibility of adding new categories to the existing 15 groups eligible for free public transport in the Indonesian capital. According to Pramono, the Jakarta Provincial Government continues to campaign for the utilisation of the 15 free categories to encourage the public to use public transport. “It is possible that we will add more categories and make them free. This is so that the cross-subsidy is fairer; those who cannot afford it travel for free, while those who can afford it pay a slightly higher fare,” Pramono said in South Jakarta on Thursday (11/6). He also promised to seriously consider the Transjabodetabek fare adjustment to ensure residents do not switch back to using private vehicles. Furthermore, he confirmed that Transjabodetabek fares would be considered based on distance, so the adjustment does not burden the public under the current circumstances. “Not all Transjabodetabek fare increases will be high. Because as governor, I am also considering the public’s capacity in conditions like these,” Pramono stated. He previously emphasised his commitment to making Jakarta a comfortable city for its citizens. Despite the fare adjustments, Pramono said his administration would continue to increase the fleet to make the service better and more comfortable for users. “So that the habit or behaviour of people taking public transport increases, and that is what we will do,” Pramono explained. On Wednesday (10/6), Pramono expressed his optimism that public transport users would continue to rise despite the Transjabodetabek fare adjustment, especially amid the increase in non-subsidised fuel prices this week. “Moreover, with this fuel price increase, the opportunity for people to take public transport is even greater,” Pramono said in Menteng on Wednesday. Pramono noted that public transport connectivity in Jakarta has reached 93 percent, and although ridership is still below 30 percent, he believes the figure can increase. Pramono is targeting a rise in public transport users of 5 to 10 percent annually, which he hopes can address congestion and pollution issues in the capital. In addition to making public transport free for 15 groups, Pramono is also seeking to boost ridership by issuing Governor’s Instruction Number 6 of 2025 for the Special Capital Region of Jakarta, which mandates all civil servants to use public transport every Wednesday.
