Jakarta Governor Pramono Addresses Air Pollution, Plans Artificial Rain and Boosts Public Transport

Jakarta’s air pollution became a talking point among netizens when the AC Milan vs Chelsea match was held in Jakarta some time ago. Governor of DKI Jakarta Pramono Anung said the condition was linked to Jakarta not having seen rain for quite a long time.

The spotlight emerged on the social media platform Threads, which posted a screenshot of official Instagram content from Chelsea and AC Milan showing the atmosphere in Jakarta.

The uploader highlighted the grey sky over Jakarta caused by air pollution.

“Although yesterday when Chelsea played AC Milan, one of the complaints was about what, because it had not rained for too long,” Pramono said in the Setia Budi area, South Jakarta, Tuesday (11/8/2026).

“We are preparing cloud seeding, hopefully there will be clouds, and as soon as there are clouds we will immediately carry out cloud seeding for Jakarta and its surroundings,” he continued.

Pramono also said the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government continues to encourage the public to switch from private vehicles to public transport as one of the efforts to reduce air pollution. According to him, the use of several public transport modes in Jakarta has increased.

“The use of public transport, especially first of all TransJakarta, has increased by almost 15 percent, MRT has increased by almost 23 percent, then LRT by slightly less, 12 percent,” Pramono said.

He explained that the increase was driven by a number of policies, one of which is keeping public transport fares affordable. In addition, the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government provides free services for 15 groups of people.

Pramono also said public transport connectivity in Jakarta has now reached more than 93 percent. Meanwhile, the utilisation rate is said to have increased from around 23 percent previously to more than 31 percent.
