Jakarta Governor Pledges Full Support for Sekolah Rakyat Expansion

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung attended an Open House at Sekolah Rakyat Senior High School 10 in South Jakarta on Friday, 3 July 2026. The event was held for parents and prospective students of the institution, which is part of a national programme for disadvantaged families.

Pramono was visibly moved by performances from the students, which included a Betawi traditional dance, a martial arts display, and speeches delivered in Mandarin, Arabic, and English. “Watching what the children presented today was truly extraordinary and inspiring,” Pramono said.

He recounted his own humble upbringing in Kediri, where his parents worked as teachers and raised seven children. “If it were not for government scholarships, I would not have made it. That is why I was so touched listening to the Minister of Social Affairs and enjoying the children’s performances,” he added.

Pramono stated that the Sekolah Rakyat concept, an initiative of President Prabowo Subianto, represents hope for underprivileged families to access quality education. He noted the programme aligns with Jakarta’s priority initiatives, including the Jakarta Smart Card (KJP), the Jakarta Superior Student Card, and the diploma redemption amnesty programme. Currently, 190 students at the South Jakarta campus are KJP recipients.

“The faces of our children here are faces full of hope. They are faces that have not lost their spirit to look towards the future,” Pramono said. He committed the Jakarta provincial government to fully supporting the programme’s development, including preparing new locations for a Sekolah Rakyat campus capable of accommodating 1,000 students.

Social Affairs Minister Saifullah Yusuf explained that President Prabowo had directed the expansion of Sekolah Rakyat to reach a capacity of 1,000 students. He welcomed the Jakarta administration’s support, noting that ten pilot sites have been identified, with eight currently undergoing renovation. These include a building owned by the National Institute of Public Administration in Pejompongan, as well as sites in Marunda and Curug. The minister added that while capacity expansion is occurring in other regions, Jakarta requires acceleration as it currently has only one permanent Sekolah Rakyat campus.
