Jakarta Governor Issues Stern Warning to Health Workers Mocking Deceased BPJS Patient
Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has instructed the Health Department to issue a stern warning to health workers who mocked a patient using BPJS Kesehatan on social media. This firm step was taken following the viral case of a BPJS patient who died after allegedly receiving delayed medical treatment. “I will ask the Health Department to issue a warning. Because BPJS Kesehatan is protected by law, and for Jakarta, this is one of the things I truly safeguard,” Pramono stated firmly.
The issue began with a patient’s outpouring on the Threads platform, complaining about the difficulty of getting a treatment room despite waiting for eight hours. Instead of receiving sympathy, the post was met with negative comments and mockery by several health workers. The patient was later reported to have died, triggering public anger.
Pramono has also asked the Head of the Jakarta Provincial Civil Service Agency, Premi Lasari, to study the mocking case in depth to determine further disciplinary measures. Although several health workers have submitted written and video apologies, the Jakarta Provincial Government still views this ethical issue seriously.
Responding to the phenomenon, Professor of Medicine, Prof. Tjandra Yoga Aditama, emphasised the importance of empathy in healthcare services. According to him, doctors and health workers are not only tasked with treating patients physically but must also understand the mental pressure patients face. “A doctor does not only examine and treat, but also feels what the patient experiences and provides empathy according to the patient’s situation,” said Tjandra.
Tjandra also highlighted the fact that the patient had to wait up to eight hours without certainty of a treatment room. He considered this condition very concerning and a real portrait of the challenges in Indonesia’s healthcare service management that must be immediately addressed so that no more patients are neglected in hospitals.
