Jakarta Governor Instructs Officials to Maintain Security in Matraman After Clash
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo has instructed his officials to coordinate with law enforcement and community figures to keep the situation in the Matraman area of East Jakarta conducive.
“I have taken action and instructed the Jakarta provincial government to coordinate with law enforcement, as well as with community, religious and youth figures, to keep the situation conducive and peaceful,” said Pramono at City Hall on Monday.
Pramono also expressed his deep concern over the incident that occurred in the Matraman area.
Furthermore, Pramono said the Jakarta government places its fullest hopes in law enforcement to resolve the matter properly and to conduct an investigation in accordance with the prevailing laws and regulations.
Pramono further appealed to all members of the public to keep a cool head and not to take provocative actions that could potentially widen the conflict.
“I also urge the public not to spread information or disinformation that is not based on facts, and not to damage public facilities. Once again I invite everyone: Jakarta must be guarded together, so ‘Guard Jakarta’ becomes important in a situation like this,” said Pramono.
As is known, the clash occurred on Jalan Tambak, Pegangsaan subdistrict, Menteng, Central Jakarta, on Sunday (26/10) at around 10.00 Western Indonesia Time (WIB).
According to the police’s preliminary inquiry, the incident began when two people riding a motorbike revved their engine in front of a nasi uduk vendor selling outside the Matraman Jami Mosque on Jalan Matraman Dalam.
After being told off for making a noise, the two left the scene, but later returned with around five companions and allegedly damaged the vendor’s cart and assaulted residents.
The action sparked resistance from local residents, and the clash spread to the Jalan Tambak area, believed to be where the group lived.
Both sides pelted each other with stones and other objects, resulting in buildings and a number of vehicles being set alight.
Police who arrived at the scene worked to disperse the clash, evacuate victims and secure several people for questioning.
As a result of the incident, two people were taken to Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital (RSCM). One victim with the initial K (23) died after receiving treatment, while the other victim remains in critical condition.
