Jakarta Government to Conduct Routine Patrols After Student Dies from Snagging on Cable
Special Staff to the Governor of Jakarta, Chico Hakim, stated that the death of a tenth-grade student from SMAN 6 Jakarta, with the initials NAEP, who had an accident after snagging on a cable in South Jakarta, serves as an alarm for the government. He said his party will conduct an operation to tidy up dangling cables.
“This incident is an important reminder for all of us to accelerate the regulation of utility networks in public spaces,” Chico told reporters on Sunday (21/6/2026).
He said the Jakarta provincial government continues to coordinate with PT PLN and other network operators. The clean-up will be carried out in accordance with the Integrated Utility Network Facility (SJUT) regulations. This includes cleaning and cutting unused cables and gradually pushing for networks to be relocated underground in priority locations.
In addition, supervision and routine patrols will be increased, including on school routes and protocol roads. “We will increase supervision and routine patrols in vulnerable areas, including school routes and protocol roads, and encourage rapid reporting from the public through official provincial government channels (such as the JAKI app or call centre 112),” he said.
The Jakarta provincial government will also take action against negligent cable owners. He explained that enforcement of the rules would be tightened, including sanctions if necessary.
Chico also expressed his condolences over the death of NAEP. He assured that the provincial government is committed to ensuring such an incident does not happen again. “The provincial government continues to coordinate with all stakeholders to improve the city’s infrastructure to make it safer, more orderly, and more humane,” he said.
Previously, the tenth-grade student from SMAN 6 Jakarta died after falling from a motorcycle that snagged on a cable and then being run over by a school bus in South Jakarta. The victim was being taken to school by her father at the time.
“The incident occurred in the morning, around 5.30 a.m. Western Indonesia Time. When a motorcyclist with a passenger was passing on Jalan Lauser. They happen to live in the Ciledug area and were taking their child to school,” said Kebayoran Baru Sub-district Head Rachmat Mulyadi, as quoted by Antara on Thursday (18/6).
He said the accident happened when the motorcycle ridden by the victim passed the location on Jalan Lauser, Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta. The motorcycle’s handlebars allegedly snagged on a cable that was hanging across and protruding into the road, causing the vehicle to wobble and its riders to fall. “When passing Jalan Lauser, right in front of the park, there was a cable hanging across, protruding slightly onto the road, so the motorcyclist’s handlebars got caught, causing it to wobble and then fall, and when it fell, the passenger died,” Rachmat explained.
