Jakarta Government Summons 19 Container Depots Over Cakung-Cilincing Gridlock

The Jakarta Transportation Agency (Dishub DKI) has summoned 19 container depot operators in the Cakung-Cilincing area following severe traffic congestion that has paralysed the main roads. The meeting aims to find a concrete solution to the long queues of container trucks that frequently block traffic in the Simpang Kolong Cakung area. Head of the Jakarta Transportation Agency, Budi Awaluddin, stated that the congestion is primarily caused by a surge in imported container volumes that is not matched by export activities, leading to a massive build-up of containers at the depots. The situation is worsened by trucks arriving simultaneously to deliver or collect empty containers, causing them to spill over onto the main highway. As a short-term measure, the agency has closed the U-turn at Cakung and diverted container trucks to the Tanah Merdeka Terminal, which can accommodate up to 200 trucks, to serve as a buffer zone while waiting for depot access. For the medium term, the agency is urging depot operators to increase their stacking capacity threshold from the current 65 percent to between 75 and 85 percent to prevent future spillovers onto public roads.
