The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government has planted 54,038 mangrove seedlings throughout 2026 in an effort to strengthen coastal forest areas against the threat of abrasion and sustain marine life. Head of the DKI Jakarta Parks and Urban Forest Agency, M Fajar Sauri, stated on Sunday that the seedlings were planted across an area of 4.1 hectares between January and June 2026. Throughout 2025, a total of 87,796 mangrove seedlings were planted over an area of 5.94 hectares. He noted that mangroves play a crucial role in mitigating abrasion, absorbing and storing carbon, and serving as a habitat for coastal biota, thereby strengthening coastal resilience. The planting of tens of thousands of mangroves makes the coastal ecosystem stronger and the environment greener, providing long-term benefits for the community and future generations. Meanwhile, during the 2026 World Mangrove Day commemoration, Deputy Governor of DKI Jakarta Rano Karno announced that the provincial government targeted the simultaneous planting of 21,060 mangrove seedlings across five coastal locations in Jakarta. The planting took place at Hutan Provinsi Angke Kapuk, Hutan Lindung Angke Kapuk, the PT KCN Port, and the Ekomarin and Muara Angke Pump House areas. The selection of these five sites also symbolises the upcoming five-century milestone of Jakarta. Rano emphasised that the activity demonstrates the importance of collaboration among all parties in protecting the environment, stating that environmental conservation cannot be carried out by the government alone but must involve all stakeholders.
