Jakarta (ANTARA) - The North Jakarta Food Security, Maritime and Agriculture Sub-department (KPKP) stated that the current dry season has caused the waters at Marunda Kepu Wharf in North Jakarta to recede, resulting in local fishing vessels running aground.

“A number of fishing vessels have run aground due to the shrinking water levels caused by the dry season,” said Novy Christine Palit, Head of the North Jakarta KPKP Sub-department, in Jakarta on Monday.

Novy explained that this condition forces fishermen to manually pull their boats to deeper waters before setting out to sea.

Therefore, the sub-department will coordinate with the North Jakarta Water Resources (SDA) Sub-department to carry out dredging at the site so that fishing vessels can dock safely again.

“The aim is for fishermen’s activities to return to normal,” she said.

Nevertheless, fishermen’s catches during the dry season have so far remained quite good.

“Fishermen’s catches, particularly blue swimming crab caught using bamboo traps, are still quite good,” she said.

Previously, the KPKP Sub-department had continued to provide assistance to farmers and fishermen in North Jakarta in facing the dry season, which is predicted to last until September.

“We continue to provide assistance to farmers and fishermen so they can adapt to extreme weather conditions,” she said.
