Jakarta Government Boosts Fishermen's Competence for Better Catches

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Thousand Islands Food Security, Maritime and Agriculture Sub-agency (Sudin KPKP) is improving the competence of fishermen in Pari Island and Tidung Island villages, South Thousand Islands, so that their catches become more plentiful, through coaching sessions and the distribution of assistance.

“This action aims to improve fishermen’s competence whilst providing equipment support so that catches are more plentiful and their quality is maintained,” said the Head of Section at the Thousand Islands Sudin KPKP, Gama Eka Anantha, in Jakarta on Thursday.

The agency wants to ensure that fishermen have sufficient knowledge of fisheries management and are supported by adequate equipment so that their welfare improves.

The coaching sessions featured speakers from the Prof Maman Hermawan Fisheries Business Expert Polytechnic (AUP), Prof Maman Hermawan and Dr Bongbongan Kusmedy.

The two presenters delivered material on effective fishing techniques and sustainable fisheries business management.

“This activity was attended by 80 participants who are members of fishermen’s Joint Business Groups (KUB) from Pari Island and Tidung Island,” he said.

The agency also handed over assistance in the form of environmentally friendly fishing gear and cool boxes to the fishermen.

This assistance is expected to replace fishing gear that is not environmentally friendly, whilst also keeping the catch fresh until it reaches the mainland.

“This assistance represents the commitment of the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government, through Sudin KPKP, to support the fisheries sector in the Thousand Islands so that it remains productive whilst preserving the marine ecosystem,” he said.

Meanwhile, Safrudin Bin Hasan, a representative of the Ikan Como KUB, said the assistance provided was extremely useful, particularly the cool boxes which can keep fish fresh and maintain its quality, thereby preserving its sale value.

“This activity motivates us to work with greater enthusiasm. Thank you to Sudin KPKP for continuing to care for and show real attention to small fishermen like us,” he said.
