Jakarta Film Commission expected to drive advancement of film industry
Organisers of the Jakarta Millennial Film Festival (JMFF) 2026 hope that the formation of the Jakarta Film Commission can become an important milestone in driving the advancement of the film industry in Indonesia. “This is a strategic step in strengthening the film ecosystem in Jakarta and Indonesia,” said JMFF 2026 Organising Committee Chair Budi Mulyawan in a statement in Jakarta on Thursday. He expressed hope that the presence of the institution could provide tangible support for filmmakers, open up wider access to film production and distribution, and encourage the creation of high-quality works capable of competing internationally. He further affirmed that the formation of the Jakarta Film Commission is also an important part of realising Jakarta as a cinema city. “Jakarta has great potential as a centre for the creative industry, particularly film,” said Budi. According to him, with the right policy support, adequate infrastructure, and cross-sector collaboration, Jakarta can develop into a cinema city, which will also become a birthplace for outstanding works, a film production centre, and an attractive film destination for both national and international filmmakers. Budi stated that the Indonesian film community places great hope on the Jakarta Film Commission to become the main driver in realising this vision, while at the same time strengthening Indonesia’s position on the world film industry map. Meanwhile, JMFF 2026 has opened at GOR Otista, Jatinegara, East Jakarta on Wednesday (10/6) as a platform for young filmmakers through a series of workshops and short film festivals. The event, which was attended by participants from all over Java and Bali, provides a space for expression, education, and collaboration for the younger generation in developing their potential in the film industry. In addition to the short film competition, the festival also featured various workshops with creative industry practitioners. JMFF 2026 is expected to not only be a competition event, but also a catalyst for the birth of talented young filmmakers who will bring Indonesia’s name to the world stage.
