Jakarta expects 2 million tourists

JAKARTA (JP): The city targets two million foreign tourists by the end of the current Five-year Development Plan, which will end in 1999.

The tourists are expected to stay an average of 7.4 days in Jakarta and spend some US$260 per day, the head of City Tourism Agency, Fauzie Bowo, said in a press release yesterday.

"With the length of stay and daily expenses, the tourists will bring in US$3.9 billion," he said.

He said that during the ongoing development plan his office targets 9.2 million domestic tourists, with an average length of stay of 5.5 days and bringing in Rp 10.12 trillion ($5 billion).

The current Five-year Development Plan is entering its third year, but Fauzie did not reveal how many foreign or domestic tourists have already visited Jakarta.

The tourism agency estimates that 114 million foreign tourists will visit the Asia-Pacific countries in 2000, 43.5 million of them will visit ASEAN countries with only 1.2 million visiting Indonesia. (sur)
