Jakarta Environment Agency Urges Bamboo Besek and Teak Leaves for Qurban Meat Distribution Over Plastic

Jakarta Environment Agency urges Qurban committees not to use single-use plastic bags when distributing sacrificial meat during Eid al-Adha 1446 Hijriah. Instead, the public is urged to use eco-friendly containers such as bamboo besek, banana leaves, or teak leaves. ‘The public is advised to use eco-friendly containers like bamboo besek, banana leaves, teak leaves, or other reusable containers,’ said Jakarta Environment Agency Head Dudi Gardesi in a statement on Tuesday, 26 May 2026. With EcoQurban, the Qurban ritual is cleaner and more environmentally friendly, from the slaughter process to the distribution of meat to residents. ‘Through the implementation of EcoQurban, we hope that the Qurban ritual not only brings social and religious benefits but also serves as a momentum to increase environmental awareness and reduce waste in Jakarta,’ he added. Dudi stated that each sacrificial animal requires a significant amount of water for cleaning, approximately 500 to 1,000 litres per animal. Therefore, the Environment Agency requests proper management of Qurban waste to prevent environmental pollution and waste accumulation during Eid al-Adha. The agency also urges the public not to dispose of animal blood and washing water indiscriminately. Animal blood should be stored in sealed containers and treated with disinfectants such as lime or chlorine to ensure environmental safety. Meanwhile, unused animal organs and body parts must be handled properly. If space is available, organic waste can be buried in soil and treated with disinfectant. The Environment Agency also advises the public to reduce food waste during Eid al-Adha by cooking only what is necessary to prevent food from being wasted.
