The Provincial Government of DKI Jakarta, through its Education Agency, has implemented distance learning (PJJ) for educational institutions in Jakarta starting Monday (7/9) as a precautionary measure against potential exposure to volcanic ash from Mount Anak Krakatau.

The policy is set out in Circular Letter of the Head of the DKI Jakarta Education Agency Number 91/SE/2026 concerning Increased Vigilance Against Volcanic Ash, issued on 5 September 2026.

In the circular, the Jakarta Education Agency states that volcanic ash consists of very small particles produced during a volcanic eruption, comprising rock fragments, minerals, and other volcanic material that can be carried by wind, inhaled, and pose health risks.

Therefore, the Jakarta Education Agency has implemented a distance learning policy for early childhood education (PAUD), community learning centres (SKB/PKBM), special schools (SLB), primary schools (SD), junior secondary schools (SMP), senior secondary schools (SMA), and vocational schools (SMK), both public and private, located in Jakarta.

“Distance learning is being implemented as an anticipatory measure and to protect the school community from potential exposure to volcanic ash,” states one of the provisions in the circular.

In addition to implementing distance learning, heads of educational institutions are asked to provide guidance and monitoring of the learning process and to offer alternatives should any obstacles arise.

The Jakarta Education Agency explained that the measure is intended to protect the school community from potential exposure to volcanic ash while safeguarding their safety and health, including vulnerable groups.

The implementation of distance learning is also an effort to fulfil children’s right to educational services while there is potential for volcanic ash impacts in the Jakarta area. The policy takes effect from Monday, 7 September 2026, until further notice from the Provincial Government of DKI Jakarta.

Through this policy, the learning process continues while adapting to conditions and taking into account the safety and health aspects of students and the school community.

Reza emphasised that this policy is situational and will be evaluated every three days to monitor developments in the haze conditions.
