Jakarta East City Government Strengthens Commitment to Waste Reduction at Source
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Jakarta East City Government continues to strengthen environmental management efforts through waste reduction at source to curb the volume of rubbish sent to the Integrated Waste Processing Site (TPST) Bantar Gebang. “Everyone is committed to reducing rubbish accumulation. For waste reduction, the method is to sort it and then process it. Inorganic waste becomes something else, and organic waste can also be processed,” said Jakarta East Mayor Munjirin at the Jakarta East Mayor’s Office on Wednesday. Munjirin stated that his side will routinely hold Monitoring and Evaluation Meetings (Monev) on Waste Handling as part of periodic evaluations to monitor waste management developments in the 10 sub-districts. The Monev will be conducted routinely every two weeks as a sign of the government’s seriousness in controlling waste issues at the regional level. From the latest evaluation results, several sub-districts have shown positive progress. “This is the umpteenth Monev because Jakarta East has started far ahead. Every two weeks we hold a Monev, and earlier all sub-district heads have presented and there are already results,” Munjirin said. According to him, this achievement is partly evident from the performance of the Ciracas Plastic Recycling Centre (PDUP), which serves as one of the indicators of successful waste management, particularly in sending inorganic waste from the area. Nevertheless, Munjirin reiterated the importance of changing public behaviour in waste management at source, namely households. He urged all residents to start getting used to sorting organic and inorganic waste. “I emphasise that all residents must start, no other words, they must start sorting waste from their respective homes,” Munjirin said. In addition, Munjirin also highlighted the importance of data-based supervision, where each area has records of rubbish production tonnage that will be continuously monitored periodically. “So the evaluation will be carried out every two weeks to ensure a significant reduction in waste volume in each area. Waste reduction is the main target, considering the limited processing capacity at the Integrated Waste Processing Site (TPST) Bantar Gebang, which in the future will only accept residue.”Our target is as maximal as possible because of the August limitation. Bantar Gebang will only accept residue. So we still have to strive for maximal efforts in Jakarta East,” Munjirin explained. Munjirin targets a significant reduction in the volume of waste entering the TPST Bantar Gebang, while encouraging changes in public behaviour towards a more environmentally friendly lifestyle culture. Three Commitments In the activity, the village heads and sub-district heads also signed three main commitment points, namely: 1. Mobilising and inviting the entire community to implement a minimal-waste lifestyle, including sorting and processing waste at source. 2. Implementing strategic steps to reduce waste generation through continuous education and socialisation to residents on the importance of sorting and processing waste. 3. Significantly reducing waste generation based on 2026 data and reporting progress every two weeks to the Jakarta East Administrative Mayor.
