Jakarta East City Government Reprimands Businesses for Using Road Shoulders, Causing Frequent Traffic Jams in Cawang

The Jakarta East City Government reprimanded several businesses that were illegally using the road shoulder on Jalan Mayjen Sutoyo, Cawang Ward, Kramat Jati Sub-District, on Thursday night (26/3/2026).

Head of the Jakarta East Transportation Sub-Department, Harlem Simanjuntak, stated that traffic density in the area is often triggered by visitors’ vehicles parking beyond the limits and encroaching onto the main road.

“So, the business owners violated the agreement not to place tables on the road shoulder or exceed the designated parking boundaries,” said Harlem in a written statement on Friday (27/3/2026).

Harlem assured that his side has taken action against the parking attendants and provided guidance to the business managers.

According to him, using the road shoulder for business purposes and illegal parking not only violates regulations but also disrupts traffic flow, especially at night when activity increases.

“So, we issued warnings to the business owners and guidance to the parking attendants. The Kramat Jati Sub-District Transportation Implementation Unit has been deployed for supervision, control, and regulation at the location,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Head of the Operational Section of the Jakarta East Satpol PP, Charles, stated that his side has also deployed personnel to maintain order at the location.

“We have also given instructions to the business owners not to place tables and chairs for customers on the road shoulder again. We have deployed officers to assist in tidying up,” he explained.
