The Chairman of the Jakarta DPRD, Khoirudin, supports collaboration between the government and the community in tackling waste problems. Community involvement is the key to the success of the Waste Management Programme. “If we only rely on the government, the programme will be difficult to implement,” Khoirudin said when receiving a visit from the Sangga Buana environmental community on Wednesday, 1 April 2026. Sangga Buana is a well-known non-governmental organisation active in community-based waste management. According to him, synergy between the government and the community can accelerate the resolution of waste issues. He also hopes that the government will embrace all elements of society. “Without the role of the community, this will be tough. Waste must be handled together with all elements to jointly resolve our unresolved waste problems.” Khoirudin also stated that managing organic waste is one of the solutions to reduce the burden on final disposal sites (TPA). “Organic waste is actually beneficial. So there’s no need to dispose of it at Bantar Gebang.” Processing organic waste at the household level, he continued, has additional benefits, including supporting food security. Meanwhile, to process waste into fertiliser, guidance is needed for the community so they can process organic waste independently. That way, the programme can run optimally. “It does require time and guidance for the community,” Khoirudin said. Reza, a member of the Sangga Buana NGO, said that public awareness is a determining factor in the success of waste management. “We learn from the example of Singapore, where they are now very active (in sorting waste),” Reza said. He also agreed to promote strengthening the Household Waste Sorting Programme. That way, the community can implement the government’s programme. “If the community is not involved, it will never be finished,” Reza said. The government, he continued, needs to strengthen education and guidance for the community to be more active in sorting waste from home. With strong collaboration between the government and the community, waste management in Jakarta can run more effectively and sustainably.
