Jakarta DPRD Highlights Wage Disparities for Workers and Outsourcing Practices Amid Capital's Economic Growth
JAKARTA - A member of the Jakarta DPRD, Yuke Yurike, highlighted the still low welfare of workers amid the capital’s economic growth during International Labour Day (May Day) celebrations on Friday (1/5/2026). Yuke stated that Jakarta’s economic growth has not fully impacted improvements in workers’ living standards. She assessed that many workers remain at the minimum wage level, even pressured by the high cost of living in the city. In addition to wage issues, she also raised concerns about employment practices deemed detrimental to workers, such as repeated contract systems and outsourcing. According to her, such patterns are often used by companies to avoid obligations to workers. Yuke also viewed weak supervision as the cause of ongoing labour violations without firm sanctions. This condition directly impacts workers, from excessive working hours to minimal social security guarantees. On the other hand, she highlighted the increasing number of informal workers in Jakarta, including digital platform workers and couriers, who have not yet received adequate protection. The Jakarta DPRD, Yuke continued, will push for tighter supervision and periodic labour audits. In addition, the council is preparing a more inclusive social protection scheme for both formal and informal workers. “Wage policies must truly address workers’ needs,” she said. Yuke assured that the DPRD will direct budget policies to be more worker-friendly, including through subsidies for basic services, job training, and social protection.
