Jakarta DPRD Demands Total Safety Audit of All Projects After Toddler's Death in Manggarai
The Jakarta Provincial Regional House of Representatives (DPRD) is urging the Jakarta Provincial Government to perform a total evaluation of safety standards across all development projects. This pressure has emerged following a tragic incident that resulted in the death of a toddler at a corporate social responsibility (CSR) project site in the Manggarai area, South Jakarta.
The Deputy Chairman of the Jakarta DPRD, Wibi Andrino, emphasised that this heartbreaking incident must serve as a severe warning for development activities in the capital. He stated that development must not only pursue physical completion targets but must also guarantee the protection and safety of the community surrounding project sites.
“I express my deepest condolences for the death of a toddler in this event. This is a very sad tragedy that should not have happened,” said Wibbi on Wednesday (1/7).
SAFETY STANDARDS ARE ABSOLUTE
Wibi stated that there is no excuse for project organisers to ignore safety aspects, regardless of the funding source. Whether projects are funded by the Regional Budget (APBD) or CSR funds, all must comply with strict security and safety standards.
Therefore, the NasDem Party politician requested that the Jakarta Provincial Government immediately audit the security systems of construction projects. He emphasised that every physical work site must be equipped with perimeter fencing, warning signs, adequate lighting, and active supervision during the construction process.
“We request the Jakarta Provincial Government to evaluate the security aspects of all projects, including those carried out through CSR programmes. Whatever the funding source, public safety must not be ignored,” he said.
IMPOSE STRICT SANCTIONS
Wibi ensured that the legislature will demand in-depth explanations from all parties involved, ranging from the planning and implementation stages to project supervision. This step is crucial to uncover whether occupational safety procedures have been implemented in accordance with applicable regulations.
He asserted that if investigations find elements of negligence or violations of safety standards, the responsible parties must face strict sanctions. Every public project must prioritise accountability, especially if it results in loss of life.
“If negligence or violations of safety standards are found, there must be accountability,” he insisted.
This tragedy, Wibi continued, should serve as an important momentum to improve the governance of development projects in Jakarta. The success of a development project should no longer be measured solely by its speed of completion, but by the extent to which the safety of citizens is protected.
“Public safety must be the top priority in every development in Jakarta,” he concluded.
