Jakarta Directorate General of Corrections Responds to Alleged Rp200 Million Extortion in Prisons
The Regional Office of the Directorate General of Corrections (Kanwil Ditjenpas) for the Special Region of Jakarta has issued a firm response regarding reports of alleged illegal levies (pungli) reaching Rp200 million within correctional institutions (lapas) and detention centres (rutan) in Jakarta.
The Head of Care, Security, and Internal Compliance, who also serves as the Spokesperson for the Jakarta Regional Office, Edi Sigit Budiman, ensured that the department is continuously strengthening supervision over the implementation of correctional duties and functions. This step is being taken to guarantee that all personnel operate in accordance with the applicable Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
“This measure is part of our effort to ensure that all ranks work according to regulations and SOPs,” Edi told reporters on Wednesday (2/10/2026).
Edi explained that the Head of the Jakarta Regional Office of Corrections has issued specific directives to address various issues within the correctional environment. These directives include strengthening professionalism, loyalty, discipline, integrity, and employee accountability.
In its implementation, supervision is conducted through a hierarchical process via several technical mechanisms.
In addition to tightening supervision, the Jakarta Regional Office of Corrections is also focusing on the management of inmates at the technical unit level according to the specific handling needs of each work unit. Public relations functions and the monitoring of social media narratives have also been increased to maintain transparent public communication.
Edi emphasised that the department will not tolerate any officers proven to have committed violations. He urged the public not to hesitate to report findings accompanied by strong evidence.
“If the public has strong evidence, please report it, and we will take action against all involved officers. Sanctions can range from reprimands and warnings to dismissal,” Edi concluded.
