Jakarta Directorate General of Corrections forms investigation team over alleged service irregularities
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Jakarta Regional Office of the Directorate General of Corrections (Kanwil Ditjenpas) has formed an investigation team regarding alleged irregularities in the provision of correctional services across several Correctional Technical Implementation Units (UPT).
The Head of the Division for Care, Security, and Internal Compliance of the Jakarta Special Region Kanwil Ditjenpas, Edi Sigit Budiman, stated that the formation of this team is a follow-up to news reports and information from social media concerning suspected misconduct in correctional services under the Jakarta regional office’s jurisdiction.
“First, we have formed an investigation team to conduct an inquiry regarding the information we received from the public,” Edi Sigit said in Jakarta on Tuesday.
The investigation team will undertake several steps to verify the information, ranging from identification processes to gathering direct field intelligence and statements.
Sigit emphasised that the Regional Office will not reach any hasty conclusions before the investigation process produces a comprehensive report regarding the reported alleged irregularities.
“We will not speculate or draw conclusions before a thorough report is available regarding what has occurred in relation to the public reports,” he said.
He assured that the authorities will take firm action if the investigation uncovers facts regarding violations committed by correctional officers.
“We are very serious; if facts on the ground reveal violations, particularly by officers, the leadership will not hesitate to take steps or impose sanctions on any staff proven to have committed such irregularities,” he added.
Furthermore, the office is strengthening its oversight mechanisms by opening a complaint and communication channel titled “Kakanwil Mendengarkan” (The Regional Head Listens).
This channel serves as a platform for the public to provide feedback or information regarding the implementation of correctional services, specifically within the Correctional Technical Implementation Units in the Jakarta Special Region.
“If there is information regarding irregularities, we will immediately follow up to implement improvements, ensuring that the correctional system remains beneficial to the community,” Sigit said.
Additionally, the Jakarta Regional Office of the Directorate General of Corrections is intensifying security oversight within prisons (lapas), detention centres (rutan), and Special Juvenile Correctional Institutions (LPKA).
Officers are conducting incidental searches as an anticipatory measure against the entry and circulation of prohibited items within prison and detention environments.
According to Sigit, the Jakarta Special Region office is also strengthening supervision through the “one day one cell” programme.
This programme encourages daily raids and searches of inmate cells within prisons, detention centres, and juvenile institutions.
“The Regional Head of the Jakarta Special Region is further strengthening the ‘one day one cell’ initiative, meaning that prisons, detention centres, and juvenile institutions are conducting raids and searches of inmates every single day,” Sigit said.
Sigit expressed hope that these activities would minimise the potential for irregularities and prevent the presence of prohibited items within the correctional environment.
