Jakarta determined to become champion
Governor Surjadi Soedirdja saw off Jakarta's 48-person delegation, including eight officials, to the upcoming 17th National Koran Reading Contest in the Riau provincial capital of Pakanbaru.
During his farewell speech, Surjadi emphasized the need for the Jakarta delegation to maintain its position as the competitions's overall champion.
Jakarta emerged as the overall winner in the 16th National Korean Reading Contest in Yogyakarta three years ago.
"I fully realize that this is not an easy task, but you each must work hard to accomplish the honorable mission," Surjadi said.
Team leader of Jakarta contingent to the contest, H. Sunarjudardji, said his delegation comprises 40 participants and eight officials.
The contest, which is scheduled to be opened by President Soeharto, will run from July 17 to 23.
The Jakarta delegation will take part in all activities, including the Koran reading contest, translation of the Koran, quiz contest and calligraphy exhibition. (has)
