Jakarta Council Pushes for Modern Waste Depots as Long-Term Rubbish Solution

The DPRD DKI Jakarta is pushing for the acceleration of temporary waste disposal site (TPS) construction in areas that need them, as a long-term solution to the city’s rubbish problem. TPS development must prioritise a modern, environmentally friendly concept and involve the community from the earliest stage. Deputy Speaker of DPRD DKI Jakarta Wibi Andrino stated that a public consultation is crucial before building a TPS. This aims to ensure the surrounding community accepts its presence. One area requiring a TPS is Cilandak, South Jakarta. “Before this is built, there must be a public consultation first. So the community is involved,” Wibi said in a written statement on Monday (15/6/2026). Community involvement must be transparent, with the Environmental Agency (LH) detailing the TPS construction concept. The hope is that there will be no problems or rejection in the future. “The LH must provide an example of what the TPS will be like, what its form will be,” Wibi stated. Wibi said the choice of location, including the use of space under toll roads for a TPS, must meet good and modern standards. “If this is a clean TPS, one that is modern, proper, and has a deodoriser so it doesn’t smell,” Wibi explained. The success of a TPS depends on infrastructure and a change in public behaviour regarding sorting waste at the source. “It must be supported by waste sorting from households as well,” Wibi said. With a good management system, Wibi noted, a TPS would no longer be synonymous with odour or squalid conditions. “It will be packaged well,” Wibi clarified. Site selection must consider aesthetic aspects and environmental comfort, including if it is located in an underpass area. The target is for the land acquisition for a TPS in the Cilandak area to be realised by 2027 at the latest, so that the waste management system can operate more optimally and sustainably.
