Jakarta (ANTARA) – Yuke Yurike, chair of Commission D of the Jakarta Regional House of Representatives (DPRD), has backed the Jakarta Provincial Government’s efforts to resolve the waste problem, including cooperation with the Bekasi municipal government on managing the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Processing Site (TPST).

“Clearly, the Jakarta DPRD supports any plans that can resolve the waste problem comprehensively. That is what we can do, while ensuring strict oversight because various parties are involved,” Yuke said in an official statement in Jakarta on Tuesday.

Yuke said Jakarta’s waste problem could not be solved by relying solely on Bantargebang, which is located in Bekasi. The Jakarta Provincial Government also needs to strengthen waste management at source to reduce the volume sent to final processing sites.

The Jakarta DPRD will therefore oversee the implementation of various waste-management programmes, from household waste sorting and the optimisation of reduce, reuse and recycle (3R) waste-processing sites (TPS 3R) to improvements in the waste-collection system.

“We will also oversee the approaches, programmes and other measures planned to address the waste problem. These include 3R sites and sorting waste at home, as well as how it is collected,” she said.

She expressed hope that these measures would produce more significant results in 2028–2029. Oversight of their implementation is important because waste management involves many parties, from local to central government.

She also stressed the importance of coordination with neighbouring areas that face waste problems, saying that solutions require communication and cooperation across regional boundaries, including with the central government, which plays a role in managing some large-scale waste issues.

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung said he hoped the waste issues associated with Bantargebang could be addressed through collaboration between the Jakarta Provincial Government, Bekasi municipal government and central government.

Pramono said that, if efforts proceeded as planned, Jakarta’s waste management should be increasingly under control by 2028. This would allow joint attention to shift to dealing with the accumulated waste already at Bantargebang.
