Jakarta Continues to Review and Discuss Feedback on Cycle Lanes

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Coordinator of Special Staff to the DKI Governor Yustinus Prastowo has said that the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government is still receiving various inputs regarding the bicycle lanes found on a number of roads in the capital.

“At the moment, the phase is that we are still listening to input from the community. There has been a lot of input. Then we are also discussing with the Transport Council, including later with ITDP,” Prastowo said at City Hall on Wednesday.

According to Prastowo, the Jakarta government has indeed received a lot of input regarding bicycle lanes from the outset. Nevertheless, his side continues to look at the facts on the ground. Especially now, many bicycle lanes are not being used properly.

“Bicycle lanes that are occupied by other vehicles, there are bicycle lanes that are no longer maintained, there are lanes that are not connected or not linked, some are broken off,” Prastowo explained.

From these various facts and inputs, he said the Jakarta government ranks then discussed them in a series of meetings. In the end, DKI Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo will decide on the bicycle lanes.

But in principle, Prastowo stressed that this certainly does not mean the Jakarta government wants to marginalise cyclists in the capital.

“Of course not (marginalise them). Because that is a legal mandate that cyclists must be affirmed and facilitated. But how to facilitate and regulate them, that is what is needed. On the ground, what we often face at the moment is that bicycle lanes are used by motorcycle taxi lanes or there are cars, bajaj and so on. So they are not sterile and this has an impact on safety threats,” Prastowo explained.
