Jakarta Considers Removing Bicycle Lanes on Protocol Roads

The Provincial Government of DKI Jakarta is considering removing bicycle lanes from a number of protocol roads. This follows input from several netizens on social media. Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung admitted he has received a lot of feedback regarding the existence of bicycle lanes on protocol roads. One such suggestion was to remove the bicycle lanes in Jakarta. “Regarding bicycle facilities, because I happen to be a cyclist, as you all know, I also get a lot of input about this matter,” he said at DKI Jakarta City Hall on Tuesday (11/8). His administration will hold a special discussion on the future of the bicycle lanes. “In the near future, the DKI Jakarta Government will hold a special discussion regarding the bicycle facilities it has, whether they still need to be maintained or changed, we will decide in a meeting,” he said. Currently, bicycle routes are implemented across 17 road corridors in Jakarta. The rules regarding special bicycle lanes are regulated in Gubernatorial Regulation Number 128 of 2019 concerning the Provision of Bicycle Lanes. There are three types of markings that delineate bicycle lanes on the road: a solid white line used as a bicycle lane marker; green painted road markings to remind all motorists that they are entering a bicycle lane; and a dashed line referred to as a mixed traffic area. This mixed traffic area may be used by all road users, both cyclists and other motorists. However, in practice, bicycle lanes are often used by motorised vehicles. As a result, the existence of these bicycle lanes is considered ineffective by some parties.
