Jakarta Congested Again! 2 Million Vehicles Have Entered
Following Eid al-Fitr celebrations in their hometowns, millions of returnees have reportedly made their way back to Jakarta by the midpoint of the 2026 Lebaran return flow period. National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo revealed that more than 2 million vehicles had returned to Jakarta by Wednesday (25/3/2026) around 12:00 WIB. On Wednesday morning to midday, approximately 82,000 vehicles were recorded entering towards Jakarta. “Thus, the total is approximately 2,040,000 that have entered Jakarta,” Listyo stated when met at the Jasa Marga Toll Road Command Centre in Jatiasih, Bekasi City. Listyo noted that the peak of the 2026 Lebaran return flow occurred on Tuesday night, with the number of vehicles reaching 256,338 units. Nevertheless, around 481,229 vehicles have yet to return to Jakarta since the start of the homecoming period. “That is our homework to address in activities related to the peak return flow,” he said. To anticipate congestion, the police have begun adjusting traffic engineering, including changing the scheme from national one-way to segmented one-way. According to Listyo, this policy is implemented based on calculations of the vehicle volume to road capacity ratio (VC ratio) and will continue to be adjusted according to field conditions. “However, we remain vigilant if there is a high surge later; we will have to adjust accordingly,” he added. The National Police Chief also reminded of the importance of safety during the return journey. He urged returnees not to push themselves when tired or drowsy. Rest facilities have been prepared at various points, from toll road rest areas to service posts and integrated posts on arterial routes.
