Jakarta Collection Portal Launches, Integrating Thousands of Artefacts from Eleven Museums

The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government, in collaboration with Southeast Asia Museum Services (SEAMS), has launched the Koleksi Jakarta portal, which integrates thousands of collections from 11 museums under its management. Head of the DKI Jakarta Culture Office, Mochamad Miftahulloh Tamary, stated that nearly 1,500 collections have been processed so far, with many more to come from all museums coordinated by the office. Miftahulloh said that Koleksi Jakarta, accessible via https://koleksijakarta.id, represents the provincial government’s commitment to bringing museums closer to the public through the use of technology. He noted that this step not only broadens public access to knowledge but also serves as an important foundation for accountable and well-documented collection management. The innovation is also a valuable asset in welcoming Jakarta’s five-century anniversary next year, as a global city that remains deeply rooted in its history and culture. Miftahulloh conveyed that the achievement of digitising more than 1,000 collections was not instantaneous, but the result of collaboration between SEAMS and museum colleagues in Jakarta. Retno Ayu Lestari from SEAMS explained that the portal was partly motivated by the fact that not all collections in the museums managed by the provincial government were accessible to the public. She said the team faced several challenges during the process, including collecting collection data, as many records were still analogue or reliant on old archives. Other challenges included inter-museum data that was not yet fully integrated or standardised, the absence of an integrated collection management system, and limited digital access for the public. She also cited the limited management and utilisation of advanced technologies such as AI.
